Dakshinkali Temple

This temple is especialy  dedicated to the Hindu goddess Kali and is one of the most popular places of worship in Kathmandu it is located in Pharping village, the shrine is especially crowded on Tuesdays and Saturdays when animal sacrifices are offered to the deity. According to a mythology the Goddess Durga has killed the demon and drank the blood of animals. This is the reason blood is scarified to her.

The temple was built by Pratap Malla during 17th century, but the construction, seems to be very new. The preparation before and after the offering is very interesting to see. On the way back, we stop at Chobhar gorge. Legend has it that Manjushree cutout the gorge to drain out Kathmandu valley was then a lake. There is a small but picturesque temple of Adinath on the top of a hill. From this top one can have a completed view of snowcapped mountains peaks.

Krishna Temple

The temple of Lord Krishna holds a commanding position in Patan's Palace complex. Though its style is not wholly native, it is one of the most perfect specimens of Nepalese temple craft. The three storey stone temple continues to elicit high praise from lovers of art and beauty. It was built by King Siddhi Narasingha Malla in the sixteenth century A. U Important scenes from the Mahabharata and Ramayana epics have been carved in bas-relief. The minute details of this relief work clearly show the high level that the art of stone carving attained in the sixteenth century.

Pashupatinath Temple is the oldest Hindu temple which is one of the biggest Hindu temples of Lord Shiva in the world, located on the banks of the Bagmati River in the eastern part of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The temple served as the seat of the national deity, Lord Pashupatinath, until Nepal became a secular country, at least on a formal level. The temple is listed in UNESCO World Heritage Sites list.
The temple was first established in the 17th century. The priests of Pashaputinath called Bhattas and the chief priest is called Mool Bhatt or Raval.
The unique feature of this temple is that only 4 priests can touch the deity. This tradition is supposed to have started by Sage Shankaracharya in 8th century, ostensibly to stop human sacrifice which was prevalent in that temple. This procedure is also followed in other temples around India which were sanctified by Adi Shankaracharya. Malla kings honoured the request of Adi shankarachaya as latter being one of the greatest ever Hindu acharyas.

SWAYAMBHUNATH

Swayambhunath is the oldest Buddhist temple located in Kathmandu Valley. It sits on a hill overlooking the Kathmandu Valley that is about 3 kilometers west of the center of Kathmandu. It is 77 meters higher than the base of the valley, giving the visitors a splendid view.

Swayambhunath is among the oldest religious sites in Nepal. By the 5th century, it had already become an important destination for Buddhist pilgrims. The history of the site itself dates back to long before the arrival of Buddhism in the Kathmandu valley. According to legend, the Buddha planted of a miraculous lotus that blossomed from the lake that once covered Kathmandu valley. The lotus radiated a brilliant light that elightened the saints and divinities that that traveled to the site. Bodhisatva Manjushri cut a gorge in the mountains surrounding the lake to allow humans to make the pilgrimage to the site. The water drained away leaving the Kathmandu valley and the light of the lotus was transformed into the sacred site of the Swayambhunath Stupa.

Nepali religious traditions are a mix of Hinduism and Buddhism. Swayambhunath's pilgims include Hindus as well as Buddhists from Tibet and Nepal. Each morning before dawn, pilgrims ascend the 365 steps that lead up the hill, file past the gilded religious images and two lions guarding the entrance, and begin a series of clockwise circuits of the stupa
